Electrocardiography is the process of producing an electrocardiogram, a recording of the heart's electrical activity. It is an electrogram of the heart which is a graph of voltage versus time of the electrical activity of the heart using electrodes placed on the skin. An electrocardiogram records the electrical signal from the heart to check for different heart conditions. Electrodes are placed on the chest to record the heart's electrical signals, which cause the heart to beat.

What does an ECG test for?

An ECG can help detect: arrhythmias – where the heart beats too slowly, too quickly, or irregularly. coronary heart disease – where the heart's blood supply is blocked or interrupted by a build-up of fatty substances. heart attacks – where the supply of blood to the heart is suddenly blocked.
