A defibrillator is an implantable medical device that acts as a pacemaker, delivering electricity to the heart to cause it to beat and, if necessary, shock the heart out of dangerous heart rhythms. This second feature, or the ability to shock the heart, is what distinguishes a defibrillator from a standard pacemaker.
