A valvuloplasty is a treatment used to repair a narrowed heart valve. The aortic, mitral, tricuspid, and pulmonary valves open and close to allow blood to circulate through the heart. The valve flaps (leaflets) of a constricted heart valve (stenosis) may thicken or stiffen and fuse together. Blood flow across the valve is reduced by valve stenosis. A valvuloplasty procedure may increase blood flow through the heart valve. It may also help with symptoms of heart valve problems like shortness of breath or chest pain. You and your doctor may decide whether valvuloplasty or another treatment is appropriate for your individual kind and stage of heart valve disease. If you have severe valve constriction that is producing symptoms, valvuloplasty may be indicated. Yet, some persons with heart valve disease require valvuloplasty even if the illness isn't severe or causing symptoms.
