A tiny electronic device attached to the heart is called an implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). It is used to continually check for and assist in controlling potentially serious and immediate electrical issues with the heart. A stopwatch-sized transvenous or "traditional" ICD is inserted under the skin right below the collarbone. It is made up of cables called leads and a pulse generator. The battery and a small computer are both inside the pulse generator. The pulse generator is connected to various sites in the heart by one or more lead cables. A shock (defibrillation), which resets the heart rhythm to prevent sudden cardiac arrest, or pacing, which corrects a rapid rhythm and promotes a normal heartbeat, are how the ICD reacts to irregular life-threatening heart rhythms from the lower chambers of the heart. Additionally, an ICD saves and records details regarding your cardiac rhythm and the treatments the device administers for your doctor to examine. When the ICD is pacing the heart, most individuals are unaware of it. However, many people say that a defibrillation shock feels like a "kick in the chest."
