A pacemaker is a small battery-powered electronic device that is surgically implanted in your body to help stabilize and regulate abnormal heart rhythms to a more regular pattern. After a heart attack, a temporary pacemaker assists a recovering heart in managing a slow heartbeat (bradycardia). In these cases, the pacemaker may be worn rather than implanted beneath the skin. Patients with chronic heart failure or a slow or irregular heartbeat are given permanent pacemakers. The pacemaker is implanted beneath the chest skin, just below the collar bone, and is wired to the heart. The entire process takes about an hour to complete. A pulse generator and connecting leads are the two main components of a pacemaker (electrodes). The former is a small metal container that houses a battery and the electrical circuitry that regulates the rate of electrical pulses delivered to the heart. Any generated energy is converted by the computerized electrical circuit into electrical impulses that travel through the wires to the heart.
