A small battery-powered device implanted in the chest to detect and stop irregular heartbeats is known as an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) (arrhythmias). An ICD continuously monitors the heartbeat and, if necessary, delivers electric shocks to restore a normal heart rhythm. If you have a dangerously fast heartbeat that prevents your heart from supplying enough blood to the rest of your body (such as ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation) or if you are at high risk of such a heart rhythm problem (arrhythmia), typically due to a weak heart muscle, you may require an ICD. An ICD is not the same as a pacemaker, which is an implantable device that can prevent dangerously slow heartbeats.
