An AICD (Automated Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) is a small electronic device that is implanted in your chest to monitor and correct an abnormal heart rhythm, also known as arrhythmia. These devices are the most effective way of treating serious and life-threatening arrhythmias. Defibrillators treat arrhythmias in two ways: first, the device uses a burst of high-speed pacing to try to stop the abnormal rhythm (cardioversion). If that fails, the device will shock the heart in order to reset its rhythm (defibrillation). Patients are almost always aware of defibrillation and almost never of cardioversion. It can also collect and store data about your heart's electrical activity for your cardiologist to review. Your cardiologist will program the defibrillator to provide the most appropriate therapy for you.
