A permanent pacemaker is a small device that acts as an electrical backup system for your heart. It is implanted beneath the skin and beneath the collarbone, with one or two leads inserted into the heart. An electrical system controls your heartbeat. Every normal heartbeat begins with an electrical impulse generated by the sinus node, the heart's natural pacemaker. This impulse travels through the upper chambers first, then through special electrical cables to the lower chambers. If any part of this natural electrical system fails, the heart may beat too slowly or briefly stop. This is known as bradycardia, and it causes fatigue, dizziness, and blackouts. An implantable pacemaker detects bradycardia and sends electrical impulses to your heart via its electrical leads, causing the upper or lower chambers to contract and the heart to beat normally.
